Hashtags ( # ) are way to group together your tweets for a specific subject. For example, #swineflu is currently a trend on Twitter because people want to follow information about the flu. If you are searching Twitter through http://www.searchtwitter.com or a similar service you will see what subjects are currently being tweeted about the most.
