How do facebook ads work?

I placed an ad today and am trying to see how this works. I was confused so I only paid $1 for a one day ad and the impressions are 10 cents for every 1000 impressions. What are the impressions? And by only paying $1 does this mean that like no one will see my ad or like my page? How often will my ad appear on facebook with my $1 price budget?

Impressions means , the number of times a text appears on people's New Feed/Wall.
$1 will give you less priority over those who have spent much more..
you can not determine the frequency of appearance of your ad
