Why did he avoid me after I told him I liked him?

So at lunch time he was like do you wanna go somewhere to eat alone. So we did , then in the sandwich place where we ate. Near the end I decided to text him the message saying "I know we're like right beside each other.
I think we'd make a good couple. I like you should we give it a go? x "
He saw the message he was like did you text me he looked it it in sort of a blank stare or half smile. He didn't say anything or reply back as he said earlier he had no credit. I went shop to buy gum after he came with me then I saw him buy credit. In the next lecture hall it was in a theatre he let me go in alone and said just going bathroom a while later I saw him come back in with one of the guys. He didn't sit with me . I heard him say to the guy "I think I'll sit with you's" then he showed all of them the message. It felt awkward then in the next class along the way one of my friends who's a girl called me and said lets talk and said did you send him I message I said yeah and told her what happened. She said she thinks it has nothing to do with me and that he may be gay. So in class I sat with her instead of the seat near him. After class I decided I had to speak to him. So I said "Oh yeah about the message if you just want to be friends it's fine" then he said "Yeah I'm sort of with someone but we're not facebook on picture is the girl who was in my profile picture" then I left as that and said "it's grand I understand" then he replied to the text a while later saying:
"Hey sorry I didn't reply earlier only put my credit in now and I didn't really know how to tell you I was in a relationship sorry. But if you like me then maybe we should like distance ourselves a little bit and not like wait for each other in the mornings and do everything together like lunch and stuff we can get to know the other people in class better too by spending time with others. I'm going to get a haircut now so I'll ttyl"

I replied "It's grand it's not awkward at all . We can still be friends anyway we do have a good friendship and it'd be stupid to lose it over this. At least we know where we stand so it'll be gran . Hope you don't like hate me or anything now"
He replied
"No I'm just saying , I've been in this situation before and the more time I spent with the girl the more she liked me and it's not nice for anyone. So just saying maybe we should get to know other people in the class"

I replied "I understand I'm honestly okay with being friends and I know you're with someone so I won't be like thinking of you in that way. We are good as friends an we were always friends anyway we could distance if you want but it won't be an issue I know where we stand so it won't be a problem"
He just replied "yeah"

Anyone want to enlighten me on what just happened? I don't know if he's actually with that girl they've known each other ages as I did check her facebook and they do see each other a lot I think. He's never ever brought up a girlfriend and why wouldn't he tell the guys he had a girlfriend if he did? Is it possible he is gay?
I'm so confused he spent so much time with me alone. When the guys used to tease me and him about being together or tease him saying he loves me or we have deep love he'd blush and smile. The guys asked if he was bisexual once he laughed and shook his head. The guys also asked us what was going on with us two he just laughed and smiled blushing then said nothing. I'm confused what do I do?
