So I unfriended a few people on Facebook. My settings are set to friends only can send me messages?

But the people I unfriended still send me messages by just writing back to the last message we had while we were friends. I know I can just block them just wondering how this is happening?

goto your privacy settings and click Edit Settings under "How you Connect", change from "everyone" to something else.

this is how it's supposed to work - removing them as a friend doesnt prevent them from replying to existing messages

your only option is to block them completely

They can send message, I too faced the same problem. If you don't want message from them, just block them, after 2 or 3 days unblock them, after that they cant send messages to you.

Recheck the privacy settings of "How you Connect" in Edit settings for who can send you messages select Friends and check back again.

Even though your profile setting is for friends only, that doesn't prevent others from sending messages. You have to change the setting for the messages or you can block people you don't want to receive messages from.
