Need help regarding VPN?

I am from Singapore and is about to visit China in less than a month's time. I am keen on continuing using Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites. However, due to the Great Firewall I will not be able to do so. I heard that by purchasing a VPN I will be able to hide my IP address and continue using this sites. The problem is if I were to purchase a VPN account in Singapore will it be able to hide my IP address in China? How exactly does VPN works? To use VPN in China should I purchase the VPN now or later in China?

I'd recommend buying a couple of days in advance and setting it up to make sure it works. Trying to trouble shoot things while on the road is always harder.
