Facebook friend suggestions?

I have a probing question, when I want to add people on facebook it says add people you personally know such as family, coworkers, classmates etc. BUT why does it offer friend suggestions to people I don't personally know or even want to know eg. a mutual friend of a classmate or a cousin's half brother or whatever?

You should send friend request to the person whom you know well because if they rejected or ignored your request, it will be a problem for you.

Friend suggestion feature works on friends of friends basis. So accordingly friends are suggested.
You can change friend suggestion setting from your privacy settings.
