How do these pictures get downloaded on my computer?

I opened a picture attachment from my email on MSI picture viewer and I see not just the download but about 100 other pictures from the internet. I recognize some, like facebook ads but I never saved them to my computer. How does this affect my computer? Any help on how I can stop this?
