How do you edit something on your facebook profile?

I want to put a picture that is almost like a banner (i dont think it is one though) that when someone looks at my profile the picture is up the top and does not move or change each time. I know it can be done some one I have on facebook has it but we are not close enough that i can ask him so dont put that as an answer, If you can help leave the info in steps below. Thanks!

This is possible using the new 'Timeline' profile that Facebook recently rolled out to a lot of people. You need to make sure you have this profile before continuing.

Go to your profile, and look at the top, next to your profile picture. It should say 'Add a cover'. Click it and upload the 'cover' you want for your profile.
