How come people who aren’t my Facebook friends are able to instant message me?

I got several instant messages from someone on Facebook when I clicked on the person’s profile I found that they were not someone on my friends list, as the option to add them was there. I don’t know this person, have never seen them before in my life. So how come they were able to send Im’s and private messages to me without being a friend? Most of the messages consisted of Hello and nothing else.

Because your privacy settings must be public!!!!!!

Your privacy settings are probably public. It's easy to fix though, just go into privacy settings in the top right hand corner and adjust them so that they can't message you

its Because your Messages are Set So That Everyone can Message you you Can Turn this off tho to do this go to Privacy settings go to how i Connect than Where it Says Who Can Send me messages click on the box and set it to friends only
