Why does he comment on or like almost every one of my Facebook posts?

A little over a month ago, my ex, who I dated for 6 months, became distant and told me he felt something was "missing." He didn't say he wanted to break up, but that's essentially what is was. He was hurt very badly by an ex several years ago and has said he is scared of relationships. I felt like he bailed just when our relationship seemed to be getting more serious.

A few weeks ago, he sent me a message saying he didn't want to change anything, but he felt really bad about the situation and was sorry. I've gone out with someone new a couple of times, but I know for a fact he's not seeing anyone.

I kept him as a Facebook friend because most of his posts are really humorous or thought-provoking, and I enjoy reading them. Lately, though, he either "likes" or comments on almost EVERYTHING I post on Facebook--more consistently than he does anyone on else's wall. One of our mutual friends who has known him longer than me says he still has feelings for me but is scared and lonely and hiding behind the security of social media.

If I dumped someone and didn't care for them, I'd move on and forget about them. What do you think is his purpose?
By the way, I've pretty much been ignoring him. I don't "like" or comment on any of his posts.
