Twitter is just another social media marketing tool that some people use in order to increase their audience and exposure.

If you're trending things associated with a singer, then you're basically advertising for them because whatever you say will be shown to all of your followers. Then, if your followers retweet what you say, they're sharing what you've said with their followers, and so on.

For example, if you wanted to say something about Justin Bieber, whatever you say could be followed by something like "#bieberfever". What I've quoted is called the hashtag. It's just a term or common phrase that pretty much sums up what you've said. The more people use the same hashtag, the better chance it has of trending.

Another example of hashtags being used is during special times of the year. You will see things like "#MerryChristmas" or "#HappyNewYear" trend.

So to answer your question, you would be helping out the singer by allowing them to take advantage of free advertising and giving them a chance to rank high in search results.
