Why have my facebook friends gone?

I've had facebook for about 3 years and I've started to notice that some of my friends have gone, because it says 'add as friend' on their profile. But I remember having them on facebook. Usually the friends who have gone, I don't visit their profile or socialise them. It's just weird how some of my friends gone. It could be because they have unfriended me. Hmmm help!
