What is the friends list on the left of my profile on facebook all about?
There are a short list of friends down the left side of my facebook profile page and I know al of them very well. What does it mean? Is there some link to who visits my page or comments/like my posts most?

No, facebook just randomly shows a few of your friends from your entire friends list. it has nothing to do with who interacts with you on facebook the most.
