How does a website like yahoo or facebook make so much money?

I mean how exactly do they make money, i dont think its just the ads on these websites that generate all that cash, plus i have personally never pain a cent for yahoo or facebook, facebook doesnt even have ads, yet the founders of these websites are billionaires, where's the cash coming from? How does this work?

websites with lots of hit will definitely have many advertisers
which will pay the website creator

this section they generate profit through ads and payment from advertisers. also when you search for questions the first two mostly contain links to related materials that are not questions.

other parts of yahoo like email have premium services that they charge. then there's yahoo auctions and website hosting that they charge money. and dont forget their search engines.

facebook probably gets it from the applications they use.

Facebook does have adds, and facebook is payed to allow people to access your personal information like the stuff on your profile, and these those people can send you adds suited to your tastes to your email address. Same thing for yahoo.

Advertising - if you think about it millions of people hit those sites every hour of everyday - wether its to check your email on Yahoo! or to check your Facebook profile.
