Help with new facebook groups?

I wanted to create a group on facebook for an organisation at my university. however, the new design has really confused me, and somebody has told me that you can only invite your facebook friends to the new groups!
Does anyone know anything more about this, in the meantime I have just created a page but I don't really like this as I have to post on the wall as "the page" rather than as myself.

Yes , you can only invite your friends.
You might ask other group admins to help promote your page to others

on a page you post as "the page"
On a group , you post by "your name"

you can only invite your friends to the group the old group had the same deal
