Are people who have lots of Facebook friends more popular than people who have just a few friends on Facebook?
Do people who have lots of Facebook friends have a more active social life OFF OF THE INTERNET than people who have just a few Facebook friends?

Or......is the amount of friends that someone has on Facebook unrelated to someone's level of popularity in the real world?

Whatdya think? Thanks all!

I don't think they are related. I could set up a Facebook account and add everyone who comes along. Does that make me more popular than anyone else? No. It only means I have more so-called "friends" than someone else. How could anyone with 10,000 "friends" on Facebook actually talk to all of them? They can't. It's a popularity contest for most kids that amounts to a lot of nothing. I will actually go as far as to say that most people who have tons of "friends" on MySpace or Facebook probably don't have much of an actual social life outside of their social-networking life. This, of course, is only my opinion. There are people who have an active social life inside and outside of social-networking. What it all boils down to is, a person eventually has to come face to face with people in the real world, so relying on social-networks does not help much in that category.

Yeah, I don't think they are related either. It really depends on the person. I know someone who has over 1000 friends and she really is that popular. But just keep in mind she's almost 30years old so a lot of them are old classmates and co-workers, etc. On the other hand, I know someone with like 500 friends and he basically just adds everyone -- it isn't a reflection of how popular he really is.

I say forget how many online friends you have. It doesn't matter. I still know lots of people who will just *not* cave and get a Facebook. I also think that there are really popular people out in the real world who just don't have time for Facebook. Unrelated, final verdict. Smile

yes and no it depends.

i only have 30ish friends on facebook. i only add really close friends and family members. =) i accept "sorda" friends that request me, but i don't personally request them. if they bother to add me though it's fine.

the people who have 100 + friends i think are crazyy.. most of the people they prob. don't know. like the people who add EVERYONE they know/ have mutual friends with! not only is it super stalkirish but your news feed is flooded with people you don't really care about. Big Grin

in any sense, it just depends on obsessed you are with having the most friends on facebook....
