Can colleges access your pictures on facebook even with privacy settings on?

I heard colleges are looking at people's facebooks in high school, checking for drinking and what not. Can I just put my facebook on a setting where no one can see my pictures, or should I completely untag myself? I'm not sure.

If your page and pictures are on private, then the colleges won't be able to see your pictures, unless you add them as a friend.

To put your profile on private:
Settings --> Privacy --> Profile --> Profile --> Only Friends --> Save Changes

To put your pictures on private on search:
Settings --> Privacy --> Search --> Search Result Content --> Uncheck My Profile Picture --> Save Changes
