i need some help with facebook privacy settings?

you know how the admin on facebook have changed everything, i put mine on the private option. but i've now found that many people i know's friends list is now not available to see until you add them? i have no profile pic and i'm worried that friends who go to add me will not know if it's me, if they can't see and recognise my friends prior to adding. can someone give me step by step instructions on how to make your friend lists visible?
