What is some good ideas for advertising for a small business just starting out?
Looking for some ideas for a business just starting out. I have created a website, used facebook, newspaper ads, portable signs word of mouth. Wondering if anyone has any other cost effective ideas.

you have pretty much covered everything, the only thing i can advise is that you ask your friends if they can pass it around to people, oh and by the way try posting it on twitter a lot of people use it. good luck on your new business!

How well are you doing with those methods?

If you are doing well, then continue with them polishing and updating the info. There other ways, of course, but stick with what works; at least for now.

If they are not working, then it is not the venue, it is your methods that need to be looked at.

Are you targeting keywords to get the traffic?

Traffic is what you need, not more venues.

Take a look at this free tool that you can use to optimize your website for maximum traffic:

Business cards. Everyone you talk to, at the end of the conversation, it's easy to work in a quick, "Oh let me give you my card." Also little post card size flyers. I've seen them done in full color with UV coating and everything and they look real clean. You can leave those at local businesses, hand them out, have them ready for any expos you might get a booth at, etc.

Also search engine optimization and posting your URL and information on classifieds web sites.

Check out http://wavebreakweb.com. They do all of that and cover a lot of other advertising bases. They're based in California but their designer told me they have clients all over the place.

You could use a Mini DVD or Mini CD-ROM Brochure.

These marketing tools are so much more memorable than simple printed brochures and business cards.

Plus, they are cheap to create and cheap to produce.

craigslist.com in the small biz section. It will also get your website indexed in the search engines if you include your website in the ad.

It's hard to help without knowing what business you're in.

I had great success with this fund raising idea.

I went to the local school and gave them a number of coupons. For every coupon they sold ($20) I would donate $5.

This way I got to measure how effective the campaign was, I donated to a favorite cause, and I got a write off. Triple win!

In addition to that, try banner ads and classifieds under specific categories. Add more classifieds list to your portfolois. You can get a list of classifieds from experienced webmasters.
The more you publicise, the better media exposure you get... beginning with top ranking sites. It helps in your web presence as well as increasing your site ranking in search engines too.
Post your url websites in the your list. Keep addding your list and submit your website to them regularly.
Feel free to try use thse resources.

instead of trying to go for quantity you should aim at quality in that you aim your advertising at your specific target market

find out who your customers are, advertise at them and save money in that your advertising is not going to waste to people who wont respond to it
