If you're using google chrome, there's a plug-in the the web store. (Just go to the new tab page and at the bottom right click 'Web Store') The extension is called "Disable Timeline on Facebook" or go to removemytimeline.com

there is no way to remove it - everyone is being converted to the timeline - it's the new look for facebook, not an optional update - they are now forcibly converting everyone slowly without your consent

Facebook are moving everyone to Timeline and you cant remove Timeline once its enabled on your account.

However, if you dont like the 2 column layout of timeline, you can view it in a single column format, which is similar to the old style profiles, if you install the FB Purity browser extension. It also has lots of other useful features for cleaning up and customising your Facebook.
