Should i smile at him first or add him on facebook?

So theres this one guy at my school who i think its cute for about a year now. Im 16 almost 17 and hes a year older. So i dont know him, we have no mutal friends and no classes together and he doesnt know i exist. But i know his name. So what should i do first:
1) Smile at him when i see him in school which is hard cos he never looks at me and even when i have the chance to do it im scared that hell think im weird and wont smile back
2) Add him on fb. Cos i already found him but he seems not to use it that much since he has only 45 friends and no profile or cover photo. And also we have no mutal friends.
I also dont wanna feel awkward the next time i see him in school and he may think' who the hell is this girl and why did she add me'
So what do u think i should do first?

i would do number 2 but also add a message stating you have a big crush on him
