What is Close Friends on Facebook?

I'm just curious I haven't been on Facebook in a while. And I see there is a new thing called close friends. This my be stupid of me asking the question because, the title can infer that. But, my real question is how it works. I logged on today from my iPhone & since I haven't been on lately I have no one on my close friend list. But, I'm getting notifications from some people I know more than other people on Facebook. But, those people aren't on my list of close friends. Did they add me on their close friends list?; is that why I'm getting notifications? Because, other than that my personal close friends list is empty? Thanks

Close friend are those friend which mutual to you. You can also select as close friend if you want to a close friend list in your profile.
