How to tell my friends I've been diagnosed with AML leukaemia?
Well I'm 15 and I went to the doctors and they took a blood sample and then they phoned my mum and said that I needed to go to GOSH straight away as I was very ill. And it's been a shock to me but how do I tell my friends that after this half term I won't be going back to school with them?? How can I tell them!?!? By the way I haven't got Facebook or twitter:/

Phone them and ask them to meet you in an area, then be direct.
It will work better in the long run.

You can call them on the phone. tell them "listen I have some bad news I want to tell you" and then you go ahead and break it down. tell them the implications. I hope that you feel better and have a bright life.

it will be very hard but you must do it straight forward without any hesitation , they have to know all about it they might be shocked but they will understand immediately , it's better to tell your friends so they can support you , everyone who loves you truly will pray for you and will support you through the very end ,

What treatment protocol are you on, Harriet? You could tell your friends all the details and I am sure they will be very, very sympathetic!

There's another Harriet online with pretty well the same story as you. She has neuroblastoma, but doesn't seem to understand what it is. She

What!! a coincidence. Off to the same hospital as you.

Don't give up your day job..

Surely your mom has been in contact with the school? Can't your mom talk to your friends' moms? That's generally what happens.

Call them up and just tell them. Invite them to visit you at the hospital if your counts allow.

Speak to your oncology team. They are used to this.

What kind of AML do you have? What kind of protocol are you on?

I'm always amazed that people join Yahoo and immediately ask a question like this. I'd be more inclined to find a diagnosis-specific group. It's not that hard, particularly with leukemias.

At 15 you went to the doctor's by yourself?

You had tests done without parental consent?

Your doctor's team knows how to counsel you.

OK, a warning for regulars on this forum.

Schools in most parts of England are closed this week; expect a rash of dodgy 'I've got cancer/I've got three months to live/how can I tell them stories.
