Like when you type # followed by a word. I have no idea!

It's a hash tag. It's just a way of designating keywords that can be used to search for particular tweets concerning a subject matter, the same way you tag YouTube videos.

that's a hash tag...they usually put them when its a trending topic like...
#WhenIWasInHighSchool.....etc |

It's called a hashtag. It helps to find others that are talking about the same topics as you - and to organize the trending topics. So if you were tweeting about glee you could say:
Last nights #glee episode was awesome! I use it to emphasize the main topic of my tweet - as above the main topic is glee. Make sense? |
