Twitter is a dying animal. I mean unless your a celebrity and a slave to keeping track of what others are doing your never going to get a huge following outside of your usual friends. Remember Twitter is not a race. It's a means to inform people (i.e friends) of what your doing.

It depends on the keywords that you use when you tweet. - Marketing, Insurance, CEO, fashion, xxx, porn, photography, Google will get your more followers if you're lucky.
Also if you're holding a solid conversation with your followers, other people will tend to follow you.
If you also have a lot of actual friends on Twitter it helps. They can recommend you to their followers.
If one of your friends is a well-know person (or a celebrity) and tweets to you often.
Followers who retweets your tweets.
If you post a lot of photos (HQ pictures are recommended) eg from your vacation, work, school...
Videos also help.
Tweets around four times (excluding the replies) per day.

Basically if you follow these steps you can easily have 5-15 followers per day or maybe more. Who knows?
