putting your photograph in magazine covers, ads, old books? Photoshop?

I've seen many people on facebook putting they face in covers of magazines, ads in bus stops and old book, many of them don't look like they knew how to use photoshop, even if they knew basic things this looks like a good job, so I thought it mus be a software that puts layers in photos.

Is it an app for facebook? then what's the name?
Is it an internet app?
do they really know photoshop very well but they hide their knowledge behind a dummy curtain?
