Questions about some communication skills issues?
Cast your mind back to your first week at college, university or work and consider the following, possibly not too unusual, scenario.

Pearl arrives on her first day at university full of excited and anticipation. Her first task is to get settled into her new room. She follows the instructions on her letter from the university accommodation office and locates her room in the hall of residence, only to find that it is already occupied by another newly arrived student, Iingsong. The compare accommodation office letters to find that they have identical details. With some difficulty and lots of gesturing Pearl persuade Iingsong, who is understandably exhausted and disorientated having spent the last 22 hours travelling from his home town in China, to accompany Pearl to the accommodation office to resolve the problem. The accommodation officer explains that they have a new online system for room allocation and there must have been an error. He does not apologise but does quickly manage a new room for Pearl.
The next day is the first day of induction week. The first event on the schedule is an introductory talk. Pearl finds herself in a lecture theatre with 300 other students, straining to listen to a very quiet explanation of how the administration and computing systems work and who to see if they have academic, financial or emotional problems! Should they have problems already? This talk lasts for 1 hour and there is no opportunity to ask questions. Pearl seriously hopes that this is not how lectures will be! She is looking forward to talking to other students and meeting her tutor at the ‘Meet your tutor group’ event, next on the schedule. She gets to her department with some difficulty as, due to building work, the new signage has not been put in place, only to find that ‘Meet your tutor group’ event has been postponed until tomorrow and that she should go to register. She thought she’d already done this online but joins the queue of several hundred students snaking around the sports hall. Having finally registered (again) she goes back to her room to take advantage of the Wifi connection and contact her friends on Facebook. She tries to log on but finds that she needs a password to access the network. The password has been mailed to her university e-mail account but she can’t open that because she can’t access the network! Defeated she heads to the bad and bumps into Iingsong with a group of new friends, that he did manage to meet through a ‘Meet your tutor group’ session. The all have tales of confusion to tell, and laugh about the idiosyncrasies of communication in large onganisations.

Questions:

1.What are the barriers to communication that Pear faces during her first two days at university?

2.What would you recommend that the organization does to address each of these barriers and improve the experience of new students?

3.What might Pearl have done differently herself to overcome them?

If you can be specefic I will appreciate it a lot :-)
