I'm thinking about spending a fair amount of my advertising budget on targeted ads on Facebook, but obviously I need to know if they work first. I'd love to hear your experiences and insights.

It depends what you're looking for.

Facebook conversion rates are notoriously bad, but for a product where you're trying to build awareness and/or community involvement, FB ads aren't a bad choice.

The key is in finding something that will engage your consumer in an experiential manner, rather than transactional. Integration into other Facebook features (Fan groups, etc.) will be useful if you go this route.

I have never placed Facebook ads but from the perspective of a prospect, I never saw a single ad that was remotely relevant. Some were frankly surreal or creepy. Over the years Facebook has served me ads that imply that it has thought variously that...

1) I am gay.
2) I am Hindu.
3) I am a jock.
4) I live in Birmingham, U.K. and can afford £457 love-seats.

All of these are inaccurate.

One of my friends started dating an engineer and was promptly bombarded by adverts for wedding rings, Victoria's secret and technology schools. She was highly disturbed out about this.

Unless someone can come along with actual nuts-and-bolts money answers that suggest my experience is atypical I would suggest that you not spend a significant amount of money.

They work if used properly. You have to go thru the settings and target who you are trying to target. It really works best for products/services open to anyone. It doesnt hurt to try, you can sometimes find coupons online.

I use adsense personally and same thing if setup right it works great I do have a adsense $75 credit I will share with all of you at this link: http://www.voltagenewmedia.com/seo/free-...ditcoupon/ not spam, feel free to repost it!
