How to keep facebook likes private?

My friend told me that getting notifications from me whenever I like something is annoying, and that I should "turn my likes onto only me". She told me I can do this by clicking on myself and then recent activity, but I can't really do it. Can someone tell me how to make it so people don't get notifications of what I like more specifically?
