If I create a group on facebook do the people I invite to join become friends?

I want to create a facebook group concerning people who attended a certain school. Now when I send out invites to people and they accept, do these people become friends of that group? Or are they considered just "fans"?

No, they just become members. In fact, when you create the group, you can only make members people who are already friends, and if the group is open then anybody can join.
