Should I just use apps for Facebook and Twitter?

For my Macbook Pro, should I just download apps so I can use them when I want to check them. I find I constantly open them up when ever I open up safari. It's like routine, and I want to quit it because it distracts me to much from my studies. Do you think getting a good app just to put on the side somewhere would help me out.

What are the best social networking apps to get for Twitter and Facebook? I can pay money because I have App Store money..

Right now they are both tabs in my browser so it literally takes half a second to bring up whenever I'm on the internet.
