Deeply confused about this guy. Help?

Okay so this guy in my art class acts like he likes me (more than a friend) sometimes, and other times he doesn't.
He'll talk to me one day, then ignore me the next. The hell?
Anyway.
Here are some moments where he acts like he likes likes me:
Our school has a news broadcasting thing that comes on every morning, and they played a song at the end that was like: 'Have you ever loved someone so much, it makes you cry?' and out of the corner of my eye he looked at me for a long time then looked down at his paper.
I dunno if that's proof that he likes me, but it seemed a little weird to me.
He always smiles and laughs at the things I say, and I catch him looking at me sometimes. And when I walk in art sometimes he yells out my name.
& Today he was wearing a tie and a nice shirt (oh my Jesus he looked so cute yet stupid)
& I called him a weirdo, and he called me ugly.
(In what universe is calling someone 'ugly' flirting?)
Anyway, it kinda hurt my feelings so I tried to ignore him until class was over, but he kept poking my arm and saying my name until I looked at him, and then he kept talking and laughing like he didn't just insult me.
The 'ugly' comment still kinda hurts, now I don't even wanna look at him since my face is such a problem for him.
And then he was like "How did I get so lucky to sit by you guys?" (another girl sits at my table, too) and then he was like "You two are the best people in this room."
And today when he was annoying me, i guess I shot him an ugly look and he mouthed: "I like you" or something like that, and he was smiling and blushing.

He talks to me on Facebook sometimes and he flirts a little bit, I guess. But he doesn't talk to me outside of art unless I talk to him. When I'm walking to class and I see him, I punch him in the arm and he makes faces at me.

This is so freaking confusing, you have no idea. Now I am starting to like him and I have no clue if he likes me or not. I am deeply confused and I just want to tell him to go away. Ugh. Why do guys do that to girls? Is he just being nice and friendly? Jesus help.

Hi! Im the guy u gave the book idea to, thanks! Its awesome! Okay well if i were u i would avoid him for about a week and see if he trys to get close to you or talks to you, if so he proboly like u! But if he calls u ugly if u guys start dating, kick him to the curb
