On a facebook timeline, how do you stop receiving notifications from friends?

I'm trying to stop receiving notifications on my feed from a friend without blocking or removing them. I know this person found a way to do it with her timeline, but I can't seem to do the same.

On the feed, I click the arrow in their message and it only allows me to report their story or spam. On their profile page, it doesn't give me an option to stop being notified by them. On my friends page, there's no unsubscribe button. So I'm totally stuck with this. Any help?

If you are on facebook.com and not your profile page. You should be able to click the arrow beside any message or photo they have posted and tell it to hide all messages from that person. You can't do it from your timeline or from their timeline. It has to be done from the news feed where it shows everyone's statuses and such.
