How can I keep my Facebook profile picture without losing the comments?

Hey, well, I have this picture on facebook that I'd like to make into my profile picture. I tried it, but I lost all of the comments and likes, so I went back to my original one. I did it by pressing the "Make profile picture" button, but it didn't work.
Any tips?

Instead of using the "make profile picture" button, upload it again onto Facebook, so you have two pictures in your profile. Do it just like you would any other picture that isn't in your profile already.
