Anyone know anything about Twitter? Help?

I'm really confused by twitter and how you reply. I know how to reply to a tweet and i get that that reply will show up on my twitter feed. What I do not understand is how you can see what the person is replying to and what they have said. ie. - “@person1: @person2 what have you done to your hair???!” You don't like it??

Normally you can only see just the reply but in this case you can see what tweet they have replied to. How do you do this? When i click to reply to a tweet, it just says what i have replied. Not the first bit.

I think that you click the little speech bubble icon next to all the other icon's
