How can you make a picture from an album on facebook your profile picture, while still keeping the likes?

Someone told me you can choose to make it your profile picture, then just go to your profile picture album and delete the new copy that Facebook makes in order to keep the original picture's likes and comments. But does that actually work? If you delete the copy under Profile Pictures, would it still show up as your profile picture?
