I have firefox and use Adblocker. It blocks most ads on Facebook and any other sites I goto. It won't block ads when you watch youtube videos though.

First, download Google Chrome. It's Google's internet browser that is x10 faster and has the next option you will like, called Adblock.
Open Google Chrome and search Adblock Plus. Download and install to Chrome, this will prevent all ads and make your internet a lot faster.

well anyone who tells you to stop popup ads by buying a new computer doesn't know alot, if you ask me ... FIRST ... I'd say that if the are in appropriate ads and not the average ad, then you have malware ... scan with either or both of the following programs

MalwareBytes ( http://www.superantispyware.com/ )... like all products they may have false alarms, so dont panic (especially if you see "tracking cookies", though my bet is they will find infected items)

------------------------------------------
For system "tuneup" i'd suggest:

Overall System Tools

Glary Utilities - ( http://www.glarysoft.com/) (FREE)
Some of the tasks this program can perform, are: Invalid Shortcut Fixer/Remover, Temp File Remover (scans whole HDD), Trace remover, Registry Cleaner, Start-up Manager, and most useful a new user (if you ask me) a 1-Click Maintenance feature that performs selected tasks automatically for the user.

System (Temp file) Cleaning
CCleaner - ( http://www.ccleaner.com/ ) - One of the best and most well known programs for this purpose ... it also has the options to remove custom (which ones you select) restore points

Go to Run (start menu) and typing "MSConfig" and look at the startup tab and uncheck items you dont need running when your computer boots up .. (note: this doesn't remove them, just doesn't have them starting all the time)

-----------------------
For browsing without ads (after malware scans):

I'd get Firefox and use the following addon:

Ad-Block ( http://adblockplus.org/en/elemhidehelper ) are great for popup ads with Element Hider for Adblock, that helps you select items on a page for Adblock to hide
