Followers on twitter-what's the problem?

Why do i get new followers on Twitter but then when I go to check the number, it stays the same or for example next day, it's lower. For example today I have 101 followers on twitter and in the meantime I got an email that 3 more people started following me, but when I went to check the number of followers, it says 101.

there are a number of reasons why the number of followers fluctuates on twitter.

1. twitter purges spam accounts regularly. if these followers were reported as spammers, their accounts might have been deleted between you getting notified and you checking it out.

2. since there is a limit to the number of accounts you can follow that goes up with the number of followers you have yourself, some people will follow you for a few days to see whether you reciprocate, but if you don't they will unfollow you again to look for somebody else to beef up their numbers.

3. some people have short attention spans. they might have liked what you said a few days ago, but if you haven't tweeted since, they might have gotten bored and unfollowed you.

unless you're famous, the only reliable follows are from people you actually know and who are truly interested in what you have to say.
