Facebook, people you may know?

I don't use facebook much, i don't even use my real name, and not many people even know i have a facebook. Today I checked my email to find that facebook recommended some people i may know. Some were legit meaning we had mutual friends or family in common, but one made me sad and kind of scared me at the same time.

Facebook recommend as a friend a girl i used to date years ago, and now she's married. The problem is we don't have any friends or family in common i didn't know she had a facebook and she didn't know i had one. We dated before facebook even existed how would they have any idea of this? is facebook somehow going through my emails?

I not the type to upload thousands of pictures of myself and i dont have any picture of her and i on facebook nor have i ever. I just find this very scary how would they know about us?
Thanks Kittysue, but i don't have her email anymore. I tried to find it a few years back by searching her name, but nothing came up. Even if i still do have her email, how would they know that?
Thanks Daniel But we didn't go to the same school either. I met her while i was stationed in Japan years ago, there was no facebook at there was no facebook at the time.

if you have her address in your email that's how they found it. I've had people come up only to realize I still have them in my Contacts on email even though I have not spoken to them in years

The People you Know Section is Done By Mutual Friends And Networks and Schools that you are in Also You Can have people look up people by email Address And Pull up People that have a Facebook

People you may know, just like feed sorting is a mystery.

Think of all the things you have connected to Facebook - email contacts (Advertised as Invite Friends), your profile info, language, location, sometimes: apps you use and many more.

It could be also that you stalked her at some page which has some Facebook plugin (like comments, page liking, signing in/up etc) and then Facebook recorded and recommended now (Yes, Facebook is tracking us).

However, I don't think that profile pictures matter at all.
