Its mean you and whichever friend is on your friends list has the same friend.

Someone who's on your friend list (a friend of yours) is also on the friend list of some third person (a friend of theirs). While you and the third person may or may not know each other, the "mutual friend" knows both of you.

A mutual friends is a friend of your friend so your friend's friend.
EX: If I, Haley am friends with Bob, and Bob is friends with Grace on facebook, Grace is my mutual friend, because she isn't one of my friends, she is my friend's friend. Hope that helped! |

That means that you and another friend have the same person listed as a friend...hence the "mutual" friend label.
