How do you know if a facebook profile is restricted or blocked?

Can you make a facebook profile restricted so much that you don't show up in searches and people can't even click your name if you post a message on a friends page?

I have seen people with profiles like this and I wonder if they blocked me but I don't know them well enough for them to put in the effort to block me.

If you can make a profile this restricted doesn't that mean old friends can't contact you even if they find you?

The same thing happened to me and the only way i could find that person was to log off and search them
