how do i make my facebook timeline private?

I checked everything and it says its private but people can still see all my updates, can someone tell me how to step by step, very much appreciated.

You should go to privacy settings->custom->How You Connect->Edit Settings->Who can look up your timeline by name or contact info?->restrict to friends or your desire security settings
