I was on facebook and my friend posted a status saying that he got a Debit card, I was wondering how does a debit card work and how old do you have to be to get one?

A debit card is linked to a checking account. The money goes into the checking account and you use the ATM debit card to spend it. Some of them come with Visa and/or MasterCard logo and can be used on the credit card networks but the money comes straight out of the account.
If you are a minor 13 years or older then a parent can open up a teen checking account for you and you can have your allowance deposited into the checking account and if your parents agree... you can get an ATM check card for this account that allows you to buy merchandise at the stores, online and of course allows you to withdraw money from your account at ATM machines. In that case the bank will issue a debit card in your name and you will have to get a PIN for it. Ads |
