Why are so many people purging their facebook friends list?

It seems to me, there are two kinds of people. People who are collecting friends and people who may have had a lot of friends, but now have gotten their list down to the bare bones.

So why are people doing it, could facebook be going the way of the myspace?

Sure, everything has a life, birth to die, maybe facebook has a longger life than myspace

Because there are certain apps that reward you for "deleting x number of friends". Yes it's stupid, but it happens.

Some of my friends have been removing people they no longer see from their Facebook pages. Also, some employers claim they check other friend's profiles and assume that you must hang out with people who are like you. If a lot of their friends have photos holding the ominous party cups and a ping-pong ball they will assume you party with them also.
