How do you update your Ipod?

Ok, well, I think my ipod is 3rd generation, and I found it in a parking lot. I got everything restored, and put my music and stuff on it. However, I wanted to download a few apps, like Wattpad, Facebook, Temple Run, and so on. But when I tried, it said "this app requires iOS 4.3" So I tried to update it on Itunes, but when I clicked Check for Update, nothing came up. And I tried to update it in the general settings, but I don't get that option... I tried to Google it, but nothing came up. Please help? Oh, and it has no camera whatsoever, I don't know if that helps with the generation.. and its 8GB.

You should be able to update it right from settings. Go to settings > general > software update
