Why do people make facebook groups that "add new features"?

I don't understand why people make groups that clam to add new features to facebook if you join this group. Example: If you join this group you can change you profile theme or join and get a dislike button. They obviously don't work, this is just common sense. My question is what do people who make these groups have to gain?

you know whenever people visits a webpage the ranking of that page increases and if u visit them more frequently it skyrockets. This is what these groups are trying to do. You will see that these groups always claim to send a link of a page if you can add 50 or 75% of your friends. and that is how they increase the traffic of a desired website, and also they can use the link as a phishing link too.
