Is it possible that companies like Facebook and google to gain billions of dollars by just posting Ads?

I mean, I hardly see any proper ads in facebook and google and they occupy a small space at one corner...So, is it possible to make billions out of it? Besides, how do they actually procure ads in the first place before these websites are even popular? Please explain the procedure in detail.....

facebook, not so much. they're just getting started.
but google, big time.

they run searches on the text in teh ad.
then, they place relevant ads - like if you're interested in "car repair" and it shows in the text

advertisers pay to reach these ppl, b/c if you're talking about these topics and your audience is interested they might be interested in the products.

clicks can net google $1-10 or more! they share the revenue with the ppl that own the website
