Yes, you can install Java apps. Note that these are different than Android or iPhone apps - they work similarly, but are not interchangeable. So you can't install Android or iPhone apps on this phone. The selection of apps is much smaller. But you can install some (like from getjar.com).
Specifically for Facebook, if you go to the website from your 500g browser, you should get a message right away offering you an opportunity to download Facebook's java app. Some other apps that I know for sure work include gmail and google maps. See the link below for more info on some of the apps.
