If I post a status, asking if anyone from my school knows this other girl who also goes to my school because she doesn't have Facebook and I don't have her number. I have a crush on this other girl.

I don't care about other things, like necessarily getting her number right now. I just wanna know who are mutual friends are and how many mutual friends we have.

So do you honestly think this is wrong, if I even state in the post that I'm just looking for mutual friends? I'm afraid that someone's gonna misunderstand and go off to her and say that I said crap about her on Facebook, when I just was merely curious about mutual friends...

Ask it positively, say she seems nice and you wanna get to know her, give a reason in the status why you're asking so people don't think you're talking crap.
