Facebook - Clever ad or tapped into my e-mail contact list?
I logged into Facebook today, and on the right hand side there is a box that says 'sponsored' and has: "thanks to you many of your friends on are now on facebook. Find your gmail friends with your gmail account".

But... I never invited anyone through my e-mail... did facebook tap into my e-mail contact list to find people to advertise facebook? Or is it just a clever advertisement trying to make me click on it?

Don't worry it comes up on mine too... I'm pretty sure it is just clever advertisment.

I think its just one of those things that it sees you have a gmail account and assumes that your friends do too, so they want you to click on it to find them jsut so it can get more of your info.

Its not actually tapping into your email but it is monitoring your internet activity,i use hotmail and it offers me the chance to find hotmail friends,if you log into FB using your gmail account this makes the suggestion an obvious one for them, they want you to invite your friends to get more users.

Anything sponsored is usually from a source like google that monitors your internet activity, when i log in i get ads that are relevant to things i have browsed on the net like holiday companies, hair products etc and even scam ads that say things like 'if you area female age 32 you could win an iphone',all relavent to things i look at on the net.
